I have a 2012 SS2. I live in the Detroit area and winter is approaching. I considered looking for a 'beater' for the winter and storing the Camaro but I've read some good things about winter tires. After some research I had settled on some Pirelli Scorpions. Found a good deal from a buddy of mine who manages a tire store. However, he also offered me the option of moving from my 20" wheels to basic 18" wheels with winter tires included (not Pirelli's) for about $200 cheaper. Any downside to this? Does it make sense to 'save' my nicer wheels during the winter or does moving down in size create any issues I'm not considering?

Make sure all 4 tires have the same outside diameter or the ABS will fail.

 

Who needs winter tires when you got all that horsepower?

Just kidding. I've done winter without winter tires on the fourth gen and it isn't all that fun trying to get up hills. People don't like it when your sideways going up the hill. Haha

As far as your question goes, what tires come on the 18 inch wheels? Are you getting winter wheels/tires front and rear? If not, you should reconsider and get them on all four corners as this improves the handling in winter significantly. Getting traction means nothing if you can't steer the car too.

 

All four tires will be Cooper Wintermasters on the 18" wheels. So I assume they have the same diameter? Any downside to moving down?
