Default torque converter selection...

Okay so in the near future I am having a local shop rebuild the auto tranny in my 95 Z28. I have been quoted $1,500 by a well known and respectable shop to rebuild it and supe it up. I was wandering if this sounds like an average price, and I was also wandering what kind of torque converter to select. I was reading an older thread on here where Z28pete said not to get a higher stall torque converter than it comes with from the factory without first installing a tranny cooler. Why is this and did I understand this correctly? What all is involved in installing a tranny cooler?(You don't have to drill a hole in the transmission do you?)

As far as the tranny cooler goes, you'll need one cuz a higher stall makes the tranny operate at a hotter temp and you run the risk of burning it up. I'm not sure what exactly installing one entales. Also, keep in mind this will hurt your gas mileage. Whether or not that is a concern to you, I don't know. And 1,500 dollars seems a bit high to me, but I'm not sure exactly what you're having done and what the average price to rebuild a 4L60E is.

The auxiliary cooler gets mounted in front of the radiator & AC condenser. It is usually connected with hydraulic hosesin series loop with the stock cooler inside of the radiator.

How do you mount lines to the transmission for a tranny cooler though? Are there predrilled holes in the transmission with plugs in them or do you have to drill into the transmission pan...? Also, I don't really see any kits per say for this... just oil cooler line kits. Are you supposed to just buy any random aftermarket tranny cooler that will fit where u want it? Also how does increasing the stall of a torque converter help u? I understand for the most part how the torque converter works but I don't understand what stall means and what raising or lowering the stall does.

What stall torque converter comes stock on the car and is it possible to use that same stall but buy a really good one that still increases performance a bit?

A trans cooler is a breaze to install, even for a novice. And no, a stock stall speed won't increase performance. I run a 4000 rpm, lock up Yank. This is on the big side for a true daily driver but it's really not that bad. Since our 4L60E's have a lock up style converter you can get away with runninng more stall speed than what you can in a regular trans. Also once the converter locks gas milage is the same as stock because there is no slip.

I am not going to give a step by step install, the trans cooler will come with everything you need to install it and a set of directions. I reccomned the B&M unit, get the biggest one you can.

Okay well what stall torque converter should I go with? 4000 sounds rediculous for a mostly stock camaro.

You guys all need to remember that our cars have a LOCKUP type converter. When your just cruising it a clutch inside locks it up so there is no slipage, it's not like an old school TH350 or 400. A 4000 might or might not be right for YOUR particular combination, it's all about matching the parts correctly.
