Default Starting problem (yes i searched)

I recently bought my 94' Camaro and i went to go turn it on and all it does is crank. If i try again and pump the gas … nothing. If i do that again, still nothing. But if i try a 3rd time and just hit the gas once while cranking it fires right up. Also there is hesitation at low RPM's. I'm thinking its the fuel pump because when i turn the key to "on" i dont hear the fuel pump working. But if it is the fuel pump how could the car run at all?? Hopefully someone can help me. Sorry i'm a newb to American cars.

-Thanks.

If it is the fuel pump, I don't understand how pumping the gas is helping or if it is just coincidence. I thought with fuel injection, the electronic pulse is the only thing that will put gas in the cylinder and if the fuel pressure is not there or low, then it will not spray what is needed. But you should hear the fuel pump when you turn on the key.

I thought that as well, but that's the only thing that helps it to start… Also my check engine light is on. I have no idea what else it could be.

have it scanned for trouble codes and let us know what comes up. try turning the key on for 5 seconds without turning it to start, do it again, and again. then try starting it. sometimes when a fuel pump is going bad it will not prime to running pressure and if you prime it a few time first it will come up to pressure and it will start. if it starts right up then its most likely the pump or fuel pressure regulator. i would say change fuel filter if its old, check fuel pressure, scann for codes then get back to us with the results.

Thanks for the help. I'll try priming the fuel pump. And i was going to change the fuel filter out anyway so thats not a big deal. About scanning for codes, how would i go about doing that? Using an OBDI scanner? I know OBDII is only for 96' and up. I also read something about a paperclip trick. And i'll be sure to check fuel pressure too.

paperclip trick will not work on a 94, at least not all of them. an odd yr when it comes to scanning. you should have a obd1 computer and a obd2 plugin. you can make a connection using a obd1 scanner on a 94. this is supposed to work but does not on some. hope it helps.

I thought that '94 was straight OBDI, and '95 was the odd year?
I know that my '94 has a straight OBDI connection. Although I don't have a code scanner to test with.

ok thanks, if its got a obd1 plugin then you need a scanner that will work for a 94. ever notice how you cant find anything on scanning a 94, even shbox has it for 93 and 95 but no 94.
