Possible engine swap
Heh, heh, that was you. What a coinci-dingy. You also put in an updated cam too right? Maybe you or someone else knows this one then...what would happen if he used the old timing cover/opti setup without the crank sensor? From what I understand, that's solely for diagnostics, not like what the opti is doing as an ignition timing sensor. So that wouldn't affect runnability of the engine either, or would it? And, would that also mean the engine could still operate like a pre-96 engine would, but you wouldn't have OBDII engine diagnostics, but would have an SES light on? Or would it cause more problems beyond that with the computer not getting a crank signal? That's something I haven't tried yet, don't want to either.
yes i switched to a newer style cam. i dont know what it would do without the crank sensor. just a ses light i assume. i would use the 96 front cover for sure. if he wants to update the ignition that crank sensor would come in handy and the vented opti is better.
Yeah I agree with keeping it updated. It's not going to be as easy of a swap-a-roo as he thought it was going to be. And you can vent a non-vented opti, but that's the least of his worries. So...how much of his money have we spent so far?
well being he has used parts, cost could be gaskets and time depending on what is reused. i would go with bigger cam, send heads in to be p&d'd and heavier springs, 1.6 rockers, cai and a 52mm tb. oh and to the op make sure the crossover pipe at the back of the heads is not plugged.
