Default Newbie Tune Up Questions

I am going to be doing a tune up on my 95 Z28, plugs, wires and new cap & rotors

What is the difference in a basic distributor cap and rotor and an optispark setup ? Are these both the same animal ?

Any suggestions on what brand of products to use for the tune up or should I jsut stick to OEM Delco parts.

Joe

the basic cap and rotor is just the cap and rotor, the optispark includes all new electric parts, its a new comple distributor

No...you can buy just a cap and rotor for the optispark, you dont have to change the whole thing. Although it may be best to do so. The cap and rotor of an optispark are functionally identically to an old style cap and rotor, they work the same just a little different in design.

It is a good idea to replace the entire Optispark, especially if it is misfiring. There is a bunch of electronics in the opti that communicate with the PCM, and they tend to corrode or break down. So you may wind up with a new cap & rotor and still run poorly. Also a good idea to replace the water pump at the same time, because if it develops a leak it wets up the opti and some time later you have to replacethe optiagain.
