Default installing a coolant temp sensor

I have a 94 Z28, and just replaced the coolant level sensor. To get the old one out, I removed the plastic shroud like radiator cover that holds it all in place, and the battery. To get the sesnsor out, I simply wiggled it back and forth and pried a little w/ a screw driver. What is the metal ringlike brackett? I simply pushed the new sensor in past the two O-rings. Is that metal brackett thing that goes around the sensor supposed to hold the sensor somehow? I don't see how it does anything except maybe stop the sensor from going in too far. Do anyone know what that cliplike ring is for?

Will the sensor fall out if all I did was push it in the same way I took it out? Looks fine. I put it in the same way I took it out. By just wiggliging it out and pushing it back it. Is this correct?
