Ignition Module out ?

Ignition Module out ?
Well yesterday was a beautiful day down here, so I got the Z28 ready for a spin anound town but it wouldn't start, but would turn over. So I scanned it , but no codes. The fuel pump is coming on and I can smell some gas at the tail pipes. So I checked the spark at the coil and sparkplug wires with a timing light, and no spark. Guessing it's the Ignition Module or coil. So i was going to replace both but didn't know if I should get theses from the dealership or Advance Auto / Napa would be OK, I never buy parts of any kind from AutoZone. Also, should I re-mount the Module with a few washers behind it to keep it off the head for heat problems or does the head actually help cool it some ?? THANKS !!

Accordind to the FSM the ignition module should be bolted directly to the head using dielectric grease between the module and the head. By itself the module gets hotter than the engine and the heads actually kep it from overheating. Try to get a GM OEM part, the module is not that expensive.

I think the Module bolts to a plate that the coil mounts on and that plate bolts to the head, i think the special grease goes between the mounting plate and the Module, then the mounting plate bolts to the head. Seems like I have seen a thread somewhere that mentioned re-mounting the assembly away from the head for better cooling of the Ignition Module, but I didn't know if the Module needed the head for a cooling effect. I think the grease was for better conductivity for grounding reasons. And without it, hot spots would occure, causing it to overheat. I'm not sure, so i will wait until we get things sorted out. and I will get the parts from the dealership for good measure, don't want to get stranded and towed again.
Also I did check the fuses under the hood, is there another fuse box somewhere ?

the dialectric grease needs to be used to make a perfect connection. The heat issue is another story, but it's not gonna make any helpful difference by spacing the module further from the engine. Aftermarkets aren't ideal, but the BWD parts are reliable incase you don't wanna spend the extra $$ on the dealer part
