Engine Rebuild??????????
Alright i have a 95 Z28 and I am lookin to do a complete rebuild, top to bottom on this engine. Im new to the F body scene so i dont have much knowledge on these cars but i want to get around 500-600hp n/a streetable i just need to get pointed in the right direction i was lookin at maybe a 383 stroked bored .30 with the LT4 top end but I would like to hear from somone who has built one of these motors.
You're on the right track, although the LT4 top end won't have enough flow for what you're looking to do. 500-600 RWHP in a streetable form isn't an easy task. 400+ RWHP takes a good amount of work on the stock 350, you're going to have to go for the 383. For the 383 you'll need heads that flow much better than the stock LT4 heads. Check into AFR's 220cc LT4 racing heads and the Edelbrock LT4 intake manifold. You'll need to get a pretty aggressive cam in there too. You can call and talk to comp cams about what you're looking to do. There is a shop that is local to me (Denver, CO) that knows a ****-ton about late model Chevy powerplants, they're called Dragon Race Engineering. Google them and go to their website, they have a number that you can call to get a hold of them, they should be able to give you a little insight in to what you may need to get that kind of HP.
Hey thanks for the info, I have looked into AFR head and LT4 intake combo, do you think it would be better for me to buy a bear head so i can match springs w/ cam?ill have to call them guys in denver when i get back to the states cause im in Iraq right now and we will be leavin soon i just want get everything priced so i can buy everything at once, i wanna do it right the first time.
If I were you I would get the complete head, that way you get the quality valves and titanium retainers etc. The springs that come on the AFR heads are a pretty robust spring, especially on their race heads. They give the spring weights on their site, if worse comes to worse you can get a set of stiffer valve springs when you decide exactly what you want for a cam. Either way, you're looking at a pricey project. Expect over $3000 for the top end, I haven't personally looked into stroker kits but you should think about this as completely rebuilding your motor, you'll probably want to get new pistons, rings etc. while you have the bottom end off. For a quick estimation you're looking at $5000 minimum to get it done right I'd say. Like I said, give Dragon a call, if you're willing to drive to their shop they have pretty respectable pricing on their packages, and they can do a full dyno tune as well.
