set of tools from Sears $150

optispark- $300

water pump $225

antifreeze- $20

timing cover kit and new seals-$65

$760 spent including the tools and you

replace the optispark
replace the main reason opti's fail, the water pump
replace ALL 3 front seals since you are there. If one leaks, there goes Mr opti again

taken care of a lot more and put $$ in your pocket

Or- pay through the nose to have someone else do it

OK, it was a silly idea to put a distributor where oil and antifreeze could leak al over it and expedite the failure. However, with older engines, once you replace the seals, hoses, waterpump and optispark, they can be trouble free again for a long while. Yes, it's expensive but it is what it is. The people who try to go cheap and lazy and don't replace the seals or the water pump tend to also be the ones who whine later about the opti "going bad" again.

Then of course there are the few of us who had brand spankin new waterpumps urinate all over our new optis.

lol, yeah thats what happened with my old lt1 car, and when you change you water pump be sure to change all the seals the FIRST time haha, in 2 weeks i had to take off my water pump a bajillion times so i consider my self a water pump lt1 specialist haha, first time changed it, faulty water pump, second time good pump but didnt change o-ring on the camshaft so it started leaking oil everywhere so took it off again to put that o-ring on and finally got it done haha

gm performance opti from summit is 400 bucks. so 600 from a shop or dealer is in line. u can get a gm wana be for cheap but u get what u pay for. (even summit has a gm wana be opti at 245) could work fine could not. thats one reason i like summit on things like this, one year warrenty on it.
