CraZ28's Engine Build Thread
Hmmmmm, I have about four hundred miles on my engine and I'm hearing some ring flutter. I switched to mobil syn. 5/30. I know it was too early and probably glazed the bores? But, I'ld like to know if this is normal? Should I change it out and use conventional oil or does it matter?
I also got my first ticket today, I was in a work zone, following traffic. He gave me a ticket because my inspection was dead. And I have to put a front tag back on it. Darn, I love that Chevy bowtie behind it!

Probably because it is inapropriate. Send me a Pm with what you want and I can fix it for you.
lmao u da man cpl. nice lookin car craz is it yours? just kidding. lol smell the oil and make sure your not way rich and getting gas in there.

Back on the bottom of page 14, I gave some break-in suggestions, did you follow any of it? I'm guessing probably not.
What type of pistons and rings do you have (their construction, not brand).

Runs like a champ. Not to rich, just right. But, I can hear what sounds to me like ring flutter. Could be a lifter or rocker. But I think it's ring flutter. Not a knocking, but a flutter, on some acceleration and decelerations. I guess I should start by readjusting the rockers.
The pistons are forged, in America, by Wiseco. If you look at the pistons pic, it has the part number and you can find it on their website. It is a complete set, matched, with rings/instructions, wrist pins and clips. A great set. It brought the piston right up to the top of the bore. All the specs are on their site. The ring flutter is from switching to the lighter weight oil. Switched to syn. 5/30 to early? Should I switch to conventional? Or maybe a little heavier wieght, 10/30? She runs like a beast! Power on demand no matter what the temp. The torque is unbeleivable. And I am keeping it under control. The aluminum flywheel with the underdrive pulley is awesome. It wraps right up there! I love Gasohol!!!!!!!
Smell ya later!!!!!

You didn't say whether you read my earlier break-in response? I'd have to say you must not have, since you already put synthetic oil in (too soon as far as I'm concerned). A good recommendation is to change the oil fairly soon after you take it out on its maiden voyage. It doesn't take long to accumulate stuff that was in the engine from the build, plus the rings are working the cylinders over really well in the first miles driven. Then you wanted to drain the oil and still put dino oil back in and leave it in for a good break in period; at least 1,000~1,500 miles, and keep an eye on the condition of the oil. And as I said previously, just idling and revving the engine is one of the worse things you can do to a new engine. The rings need outward pressure to break-in properly, and that can only be achieved by driving the car and putting the engine under a load. Don't start a new engine until you are ready to take the car out for a drive.
As far as the pistons, forged are more durable for performance engines, but they tend to need (and have) a little more piston to cylinder wall clearance as compared to cast and hypereutectic pistons. I don't know if what you're hearing is piston slap, but I wouldn't expect to be hearing that so early in the engine's life. Change the oil back to what you had and see what you get.
