Do you have a stock coil? Does yours still have a rotor? If there is high resistance in the spark plug or the wire, it will cause it to burn. If you haven't changed the rotor and it has one, it will make the distributor cap burn out quicker.

Check your water pump, especially the weep hole, & make sure no liquid is dripping on the Optispark. You get the opti wet and you soon have to replace it. It is good practice to replace the water pump whenever the opti is replaced, as is good practice to replace the entire Optispark, raher than just the cap & rotor. Also, as Norm mentioned, make sure your plug wires and sparkplugs are in good condition, otherwise the spark will find the path to ground that has the least resistance.

In addition to what they said^^^^^^

you said the port where your vacuum line goes keeps getting fryed, i would definately make sure no moisture is trapped in the vent tube, and also make sure nothing gets wet going into your intake elbow, kida sounds like you might have a leak in that tube thats shorting out the opti. hope that helps.
