OK when you go to the autopart store and they ask you if your car has this engine or that one and auto or manual that is because not all parts are the same. Yes the starter for a manual tranny is different than the starter for an Auto.

Ask them one day for a rear main seal for a Chevy small block one day... They will ask you what year... Tell them they are all the same... and when they tell you they need a year you need to get mad at them and tell them how they need to know how to do their job without the stupid computer and learn about cars.
OK now this is something that happened to me when I was working the parts counter at Schucks. I found him a rear main seal, actually I found him a few.

55-62 used a rope seal
63-67 2 piece small journal
66-69 2 piece large journal single lip
70-84 2 piece large journal double lip
85-98 1 piece
93-97 LT1

I had them all in stock and when the guy came in I put them all on the counter and asked him to tell me what rear main he was talking about since they are all for Chevy Small Block engines. So while there are things that carry over from one year to the next there are alot of parts that change. Starters are dependant on the transmission not the engine, they are not all the same.
