Default Question about 10 bolt

I hear people all the time say how crappy out 10 bolt rear end is....

I don't ever drag race and I don't plan on it. My car is a daily driver and I'm probably at about 350 to the wheels right now. I don't ever really punch it off the line hard and when I do... it's very rare. I'm more of a... drive up a windy mountain road fast kinda driver. Maybe some day some kind of race track or autocross type of race, but never drag racing. I plan on putting in a cam in the next couple of years. I want to make 400 RWHP.

My question is... do people usually break their rear end in the beginning of a drag race or just driving around? Basically... if I make 400 RWHP... do I need to look for a new rear end no matter what... or only if I plan on drag racing? Thanks

People break them under stock power and driving conditions. Mine was a perfect example as I bought it from the original owner who was a 40 year old woman. Car was mint, except for the rear which had begun to throw an axle bearing out. Most damage would occur on dumping the clutch, but thats not to say you are immune if you never do that. You should pretty much be expecting it to go at some point and have the backup funds to replace it ready.

the 10 bolt is not a bad rearend, its made to take up to 350 hp as is the trans. that does not mean the drive train will not handle 400 hp. im sure i am in the 400+ range at the crank and the rearend is not happy. it has lasted about a year with the mods to the motor and trans. i did switch to 373 noisy richmond gears but the originals were fine. once over the 350 crank hp range its a hit and miss sorta thing, some may last and some may not.
