The cams on an LS series motor is always more extreme than that of the traditional SBC. You can get a lot more lift out of the LS series.

Right, but only for the LS1 vs LS6...

The LS2/LS3/LS7/LSX can also accept LS1-based mods, but because the bore size is bigger (4.06" vs. 3.9") in the Gen IV blocks, those heads (e.g. the new L92 heads) have larer valves and won't fit on the smaller LS1/LS6 blocks.

Also, there are other minor differences - such as fly-by-wire on the later blocks, as well as different ECM's with differing reluctor wheels for timing.

^^^ true story.

I just posted a thread about a 500ci ls2 based engine which uses ls7 heads and intake.

You can also use 317 LS2 heads on a LS1 this would allow use of the LS3 and LS7 type intakes

Ive never seen the bottom of one to tell you for sure but apparently they are only 2 bolt mains. Perhaps someone with a little more engine building knowledge could help here.
A lot depends on the set up and tune. 500 to the wheels would be a little low. Once you get into the high 5## and into the low 600s is where you will start needing to replace parts. Pistons will be the first limiting factor. The rods can handle a little more and the crank can take a beating from hell its self with good rod bolts. A lot comes down to set up and tune. If i was planing on running more the 550 or so to the wheels i would go ahead and at least do good pistons, rings, bearings, and rod bolts and have the crank polished and every thing balanced up real nice if i was trying to work on a budget that should allow any one to run well into the 600s with out any issues all day long. However as said above there are more then a hand full of guys running in the 600 both on FI and Nitrous set ups that are running bone stock bottoms.

So i see your angry. But its ok. One day you will learn to live with the fact that you picked an out dated platform and learn to live with your self and except the LS1 as your guiding light to the future.

And need i remind you...

i did not know that.... i only ever see 5.3 heads and 243 castings (ls6) swaps. as the guy above me said, the bore is larger so gen4 parts wont work unless u match the bore.
