Default gears for an auto z28

I'm looking to get off the line a little faster. When I got my car dyno tuned he said the power is there but its hard to really get it to the wheels with the gear ratio I have now, I belive 2.73's are stock. Whats a good gear setup if the car is an everyday driver? I was thinking 3.73's, but what would this do to my gas mileage? Also does anything else need to be changed if I buy the gears? Like I just buy them and have my mechanic install it(I'm not very handy)?

Thanks Guys

I have a 99 auto car that had 2.73 in it when I got it. Now it has a 3.42 rear out of a m6 camaro in it. I can tell you, you will loose gas mileage around 2-3 mpg. Also this is what you have to think about next....You know when you are driving down the road at about 45 mph and you decide to punch it, the tranny downshifts and barks the heck out of the tires...I know you know that feelin I am talkin about....well if you go bigger that goes down and now mine is below 30...Which sucks. The major plus with gears is the pull in 1st gear is just incredible, but after that it is just no fun. I guess what I am tryin to say is if you race from a roll dont change the gears. If you do decide to buy gears hear is what you need to get the gears that you want which would be for a 10 bolt and also you want to get the install kit.

As was said before, for street use 3.73:1 is a good choice. If are into drag racing and the car is properly set up, and with a good set of sticky tires, pick a set of gears that will put the engine near the red line in direct drive. ( 3rd for auto, 4th for manual). For 1/4 mile racing go with 4:11 or 4.56. For 1/8 mile tracks go with 5:12.

If you are buying gears, make sure they are of good material and properly cut. Try to get a good brand name, such as Richmond, or the pricey GM gear sets. Be careful of stuff sold on E Bay, especially if you don't know the seller.

Contrary to what advertisers tell you, setting up ring and pinion gears properly, is not an easy job, especially the first few times. I suggest you let a shop do it, or get some expert help.

You really think he shouold go with 5:12 gears in an auto? That would be like 10 mph 1st gear and would be horrible on a rear end not to mention your pocket book if you ever drive it on the road.

I've heard the 3.73's are best for an auto and 4.10/4.3/4.56 for manuals...I've heard mixed reviews about the 10 bolts, but if you are asking for gear selection only then your car has a 10 bolt as was previously said...or you could go with the 12 bolt rear end, which is around $2,000+ new (with gears already in it) and slap that on and not worry about breaking the rear end. I've heard the 10 bolts break easily, and sometimes not so easily. I'd say stick with the 10 bolt with 3.73's for what sounds like a car that you occasionally take on the street, but if you decide to do some major power adders then a 12 bolt might be a thing to consider.

pete, ur using both periods and colons in ur gear numbers. the 4:11's are 2.75 ratio, these should be 4.11 which means 4.11 turns of the driveshaft per turn of the wheel. I believe it depends on your rearend, different sizes take a different ratio, and I thought the 10bolt took a 4.10, not 4.11 (not that its a huge deal, because any good dealer should have them listed by availability anyways).

personally, even in a street car I would go with 4.10s. gas mileage suffers more from ur newfound heavy foot than from the fact that the motor is revved a little higher.
