Belt Whining....Need some answers
I have an 01 SS that just turned 100K yesterday. A few wks ago I started hearing a whining under the hood when driving but it would subside when I hit the clutch and the brake. Today it is louder and does not quiet all the way down with the clutch and brake engaged. I replaced my surpentin belt about 3 mths ago so I cant imagine it being that again. Any other belts I need to look at. My live in mechanic (my ex hubby) is no longer available so I am on my own to find out what is going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Otherwise, one other thing I can think of looking at is your clutch throwout bearing. Does the pitch change with only pushing in the clutch and not the brakes? And is that with the car moving or standing still?

Ok...the Goodyear Gatorback answers one question. Thank you.
It is making the same sound as before when I replaced the belt. Today, the noise would be not as loud when the clutch is pushed in and would subside a little with the brake in at the red light but the noise was there still a little bit.
Does that explanation help?

If you want to check the belt, carefully and lightly spray a little brake cleaner, or other non-oily solvent on the belt with the engine running. If the noise goes away, it's the belt. Also, if you spilled antifreeze on the belt, that can make it squeak.

Ok....today I was out in the car and noticed the whining was NOT there. I wondered why and then noticed that I did not have the AC on. Would this still be the serpentine belt? I turned the AC on and it whined and then when it was turned off the whining stopped.

The A/C has it's own belt and tensioner. If your standing in front of the car look to the bottom left of the motor and you'll see a smaller belt that's about half the width of the mian drive belt, that runs the A/C only. Try changing that belt and see if it helps.
