Default X-pipe sound level

I'm planning on hooking up an X-pipe to my 383, and I'm wondering if I can get away with not installing mufflers? I want a good rumble but I don't want to be so loud that it hurts. I want to get as much out of the motor as possible, but I'm not sure if it would be too loud. Has anyone tried this before? Right now I have 2 1/4" pipes wiht a 3/8" gap between headers and the pipes, and it's WAY too loud, too much resonance.

Open exhaust is loud, plain and simple. In the very least you're going to want to go for some resonators.
