Default Important exhaust question

Well, my plan was to buy the edelbrock ceramic coated headers with y pipe for $450.00, a set made for my car. And from there, have straight 3 inch with a dynomax bullet muffler. Is there even a significant power loss compared to true dual 3 inch? either way compared to what i am right now, i will be getting a lot of power from this upgrade because the exhaust i currently have is very restrictive. a lot of people have told me duals look better, but i do not want to have split end duals at the muffler like everyone does with a 3rd generation. either true duals or one big single.

I don't know exactly what engine you have, but 3" duals would cost you more and MIGHT deliver more power if you had a lot of engine. On the other hand, you can put too much exhaust on an engine - most GM V8s like a little backpressure -I've seen some cars lose about 2% when they have bigger pipes than you need.

This is a rough shot from the hip, but I think I'd go with the single you have now unless you expect more than 275 RWHP, then I'd probably suggest dual 2 1/2 inch pipes before going to 3" size on duals (I have 3" dual on my vette and it makes 590 RWHP, and we've proven that's the right size for it)

the current motor is a 1976 4 bolt 350 bored 60 over, 750 carb, 290 cam but i wanted to get one witha litlte more off the line torque, flat top pistons with the 72cc heads. stock cast iron exhaust manifolds into a single 2 1/2 inch then into a 3 inch, really sucks.

if i were to be more precise, the motor will then have a turbo 400 trans w/ ratchet shift, but as for the motor, a high rise rpm air gap manifold, and the exhaust i mention in the prev post with no cats.

the thing is with the 2 1/2 inch duals, it doesnt seem very aggressive to me. i think 3 inch pipes are the best looking pipe size, but i dont like exhaust tips, i like seeing the raw steel.

My last question is becuase my car cant have true duals unless i get the body cut up, would it be worth it to have a single 3 1/2 inch?

To give u a quick summary, this car being built to be a street/strip vehicle. it is already damn quick, sucks u right back in the seat when u hit the gas, and i am building it to be streetable, but tear up the strip too. we were givin a brief description of what was odne to the motor when we bought it, so there could be some things i dont even know about, all i know is this motor is something else.

you said a y pipe. That will defeat the pourpose of the headers and the 3 inch exhaust. You would be better off with a straigh back set or custom made pipes. The y pipe will not help the proformance at all. Good luck with this.

I think I'd go with the 3.5 " single, particularly since it helps you avoid the cutting and fabricating for the duals.
