When you bought the car did it already have the headers on it? I have bought cars before that you would think is a heat wrap on the firewall, but is really sound proofing for stereo systems. They are supposed to put the sound proofing on the inside of the car but who knows what some people decide to do with it. Also....It could most likely be a heat wrap for the firewall to protect from the headers. If you go to SummitRacing.com they should sell a big sheet of it for you. I used it for under the hood of my 355 iroc a few years back. The heat wrap could have been placed there because of the headers and y-pipe. Not sure.
