Cutout Clearance
I was wondering if I put a cutout in my '98 3.8 would it have enough ground clearance? I want to get an electric one and im not real big on electronics so would it be tough to install? and where is the best place to put it, is there room in front of the cat or should i go right after? BTW would it make that much of a sound difference for a V6? I was running no muffler for about a week and it sounded V8ish so moving it farther back would make it somewhat louder right?
While I get you a tissue, I'll answer some questions as well. Ground clearance shouldn't be a problem, as the cutout is INLINE with the exhaust piping. Electronics would be simple: a toggle switch for OPEN and CLOSED, and a few wires. The only reason it would be louder to you is because the exhaust is closer to you. I would go after the cat, as if you did the other way... The O2 SENSOR might read erroniously which in turn could hinder performance and throw codes.
cutouts on a 3.8 would definitely hurt your performance. even a 3" after cat system on a V-6 kills their lower end.
as far as sound goes, that will never make it sound like a V-8. all you have is a bunch of noise that makes people with any idea about cars, look at you with a "what the f**k was that kid thinking" type of look, and the ones that don't know about cars will wonder why you don't get your exhaust fixed
