Default Carb - throwing in the towel

Okay, I have now reached the end of my rope with the Holley 457S. I have purchased 3 of them...and simply cannot get the darn things to work right.

I have read their videos on tuning dozens of times and I still have the same issues that I had day one.

My biggest issues:

1. Unless the carb is good and warm..I mean really warm, I get backfires through the carb on quick throttle opening

2. Unless it is perfectly warm, I get a hesitation when switching from the idle to main circuits. The hesitation can be accompanied with a carb backfire or just a complete engine stall.

3. When I first start car the the idle RPM is fine...at about 650 RPM in gear. Once it gets warm the idle sneaks up to about 800+. No idea why.

The aggravating part is that these carbs work great once I get beyond these issues. But I am tired of stalling at lights, scaring little kids with backfire and just fed up with fine tuning

I have checked for leaks...even replaced the intake manifold, and had a pro install the new Edelbrock AIR Gap manifold. I have replaced the accel pump squirter...used smaller and bigger nozzles. Raised main metering jet sizes, adjusted idle mixtures, raised and lowered fuel bowl level. I've done everything! I'm done.

I want to replace the Holleys with a simpler, less fussy carb. I want to install the carb, set the idle and be done with it...please make some recommendations.

Here are the specs.
Need a 600 CFM for a 327, professionally rebuilt for 300 HP target last winter.
Uses a mild cam: ES1095M
- .450/.461 lift, 224/224 duration , 60 degrees overlap
Uses Double Hump heads, Air Gap In take designed for idle to 5000 rpm. Has an 700r4 transmission.
RPM range low...very rarely to exceed 4000 RPM. Highway 4th gear cruising speed 2000 RPM and 1600 with TCC lock..
Rear end: currently 2.73 will be upgrading to 3.36 over the winter.
Stock manifolds to be upgraded with headers in the winter
Please recommend a carb that is not going to take up all my time adjusting.

Thank you!!!
