3" headers and Y-pipe into a 2.5" exhaust, bad?
im looking into getting some pacesetter LT headers for my 02 SS, and they have a 3" diameter(where all the pipes meet), as well as a3" Y pipe. i was also thinking of going from flowmaster exhaust to the SLP loudmouth II exhaust, becuase i dont like the sound of the exhaust this car came with when i bought it. Now, my question is, is it bad that the 3" headers and Ypipe are going to go down to the 2.5" SLP Loudmouth piping? would it be better to have my muffler shop do some custom 3" piping, but just use the SLP loudmouth II muffler? thanks for any answers.

sounds ok to me,it prob going to sound freaking badass, but it should work out just find but if you really think you need to get bigger pipe then do or save your money for something else.

it shouldnt cause an issue. remember that gasses shrink when they cool, by the time the exhaust gasses reach the catback they arent taking up nearly as much volume as they used to. u may be introducing a little turbulence into the exhaust flow, but that far from the engine you arent going to hurt performance by a noticable amount

do the pacesetter long tubes allow you to have cats? i would need to get different cats right? since my stock cats have a 2.5" inlet and outlet, and im putting headers and a y pipe that are 3"

Yes, you are going to need new cats. I recommend either Magnaflow or Random Technology. They both make metallic high flow cats, which are going to be the best flowing you can get. You're going to need to put the cats right after the collector on the header, so keep that in mind when purchasing your Y-pipe and make sure you have enough room to get the cats in. Getting a fully emissions compatible LT header system isn't cheap or easy, thus the reason I went with the full Kooks system, no mods needed.

i was thinking of getting this JET HOT long tube header complete kit
http://www.lmperformance.com/15431/1.html
comes with everything for an emmissions legal LT setup. a little more than what i want to be spending, butit will probably be worth it in the long run, less frustration with this then trying to make the pacesetters legal.

If you're looking at something for that price either go for Kooks or Dynatech.
www.speed-eng.com sometimes gives sales on Kooks products and if you catch one you can get the full Kooks system for around $1200 or so.
