The car may have an aftermarket antitheft gizmo and by flipping the switch you activated it and disabled the car. Flip the switch back & see if it cranks.

It could be the alarm system or a bad starter/solenoid, or may be wiring.

Do a quick checck for the starter:

1)With everything off, check the voltage between the battery cable terminal on the starter and frame ground, should be at leat 12v. If not check the battery cable to the starter.

2)With someone turning the key to the start position, do the same thing between the solenoid terminal on the starter and ground, (usually a small yellow wire) should be around 12 volt. If no good check the path between the ignition switch and starter solenoid. Look for splices. rerouted wires, extra relays, etc.. that may be leading to the alarm unit.

3)If both checks are OK, use a large screwdriver and short the solenoid and starter cable terminals on the starter. CAREFUL NOT TO SHORT to GROUND!! WEAR SAFETY GLASSES!! (you don't want to get sparks in your eyes, or melt your screwdriver or cause fires). The solenoid should kick in and the starter should engage and try to turn over the motor. If not you got a bad starter.

check the fusible links and battery cables, they are the cheapest place to start getting into wiring issues
