Default S.O.S. Starter!

So when i try to start the car, a horrible grinding sound happens and when i release the key i can hear a resonance (like the flywheel resonating or something). anyways, i took the starter off and had it tested at work and they said it was all good (adequet current flow, bendix fully extended etc.) so when i put it all back together i tried to start it and it fired right up with no grinding, and ran better than ever!!! when i turned it off and tried to restart it, guess what it grinds, naturally. [:@]
i noticed that when i topok it off there were NO shims to speak of.
would it kill something to put a single ship on the side away from the flywheel?????
thanks,
goodfella

[&:] you need to check starter clearance to shim properly but u can also just start throwin them in there and see if it gets better or worse(not recommended) kurt
