Default problems with my horn

I've got a '00 SS Camaro, and when I got the car, you had to press just right on the steering wheel to make the horn work. But, it seemed that every time I got in my car the horn was harder and harder to find in the steering wheel. Just recently my horn quit working all together. I know it's not the actual horn, because that still goes off when I hit my panic button. So, if anyone has any suggestions on what i can try, that would be great. Thanks

Joe

Hymmm. Now that makes wonder becasue I have been having the same problem with my 99. I think, but I am not at all sure, that it is somewhat like a calculator or alarm panel. When you push on the horn area it pushed down on a circuit board or contact. The backing of the contact point should be solid so that when you push the horn you push it against the contact rather than push the whole assembly. SOmetimes that backing gets weak and when you push it flexes and the contact just doesn;t quite make it. Have no idea how to fix it though. I'll try to see my GM service manager tomorrow if I can and ask him what to do. SUre don;t want to have to pull the wheel off becasue of the air bag. There is a procedure that is followed for that and those air bags can kill. When I was a paramedic we had all kinds of problems at wrecks if they had deployed.

Yeah, when I do push down on the horn, I can feel that panel you're talking about moving around in there. I've been worried that I would have to take the wheel off, that's why I was asking if anyone else has had the same problem, to see if there was something to try first. If you could just let me what that guy tell you, maybe I can fix mine without taking the wheel off. I sure hope so! Well, just let me know when you find something out please! Thanks.

Well, I talked to the service manager at my GM dealer, a good friend who knows this stuff inside and out. He said there is only one fix for it. Replace the whole assembly which unfortunately includes the entire air bag and air bag assembly. The horn is an integral part of the whole unit. That's a REAL expensive item. Like over $800.00 to have a dealer fix it. Maybe more. He has recommended with other people that they just install a separate switch for the horn and leave the air bag alone. I'm not spending hundres of $ for a horn repair. That's insane. But that's GM and most of the others.I hate "high tech" stuff becasue it's not high tech at all, just poor design with no concern whatever for the consumer.
