Problem with convertible top
Hi Everyone,
New to the forum. Wondering if someone can help me. I recently bought a 1995 z28 convertible as a project. Last night I tried to put the top down but it wont go down. I can hear the motor going when I hit the button but the top wont budge. Was wondering if anyone can help me out with any advice? Thank you in advance. By the way it worked before. I've had the car for about a week.

Ok, here's the deal. When you go to put the top down, you have to push the top up by hand a little to get it going. I'm surprised you didn't try that as I would think it would be instink. That should get it going and the motor will do the rest. If that doesn't work then you might have something binding it up somewhere. Check the sides and make sure there's nothing out of place or the framework is correctly working. If you still need help then come on back.

I don't think that's the issue. I'm not at home right now but last night I pushed the top all the way back by hand it went back slowly. I tried helping it along with my hand as I pressed the button. It was working when I got it. Last night when I tried it, it stopped working. I can hear the motor when I push the button but that's about it. Nothing happens with the top, doesn't even move a little.

I don't know, if the motor is working, then it must be binding somewhere. Or the pump itself is not working correctly. Even though you can hear it, doesn't mean it's working.

I don't think it's binding anywhere because it went down manually when I pushed it back slowly. I guess I will just have to take a closer look when I have time. Mine had power windows and doorlocks but I replaced the doors with a 94 that has manual doors a few days ago. The reason for this was that my doors were in bad shape, panels, tracks, motor everything so I just switched to manual doors. I cut all the electrical and sealed it off figuring it was all having to do with the power windows and doorlocks. Is there anything there that could have to do with the top that I may have cut?

No, only thing in there is for the door locks and windows. I'm assuming you keep the curtousy light. It could be that the pump is bad, even though it's working, if the seal is bad, then it won't work. It's a hydrolic pump that controls two rams to pull the top down and push it up. Those pumps aren't cheap.
