hoping someone could help me out. the other night was the first cold night we have had here in CT. when i started my car i heard a whinning noise coming from the engine. it was pitch black out so i couldnt determine exactly where it was coming from. if i turn the wheel lock to lock it sounds even worse. however after warming the car up for 10 minutes or so the noise went away. someone please help.

Hmmm, is the power steering fluid level okay, or, has it ever been 'LOW' even for a short while? From previous experience I understand it does not take long to damage the steering pump if the level gets low.

Powersteering fluid of GM's Specs is hydroscopic. It absorbs water. After a while it can absorb enough water when it is cold, it will have a higher density and will separate from the actual fluid. So if it goes away when it's warm then its the fluid. Getting it flushed cost about $45.

If you think it's the belt that is supsect, there are two ways on checking it. Either spray WD-40 or equivelant on the belt. A bar of soap will do too. If that quiets it down it's the belt. If it is still persistant, it could be the bearings in a pully. But you said it gets worse when you use the steering wheel. Leave us some feedback so see if we can figure out what it is by process of elimination.

well the belt was replaced like 2 months ago so i dont think its that. i think i need a flush like you said before shnormo because it only happens when it is cold out and then once the car warms up for a little its fine.
