Open or Positraction best in snow and wet
I am new to the snow belt and am concerned about driving in the snow, ice and wet conditions. It is my understanding that the 4th generation V6 Camaros have open differentials. Is this correct? Also I am hearing mixed infrmation about which type differential is best in the wet and snow, the open type or positraction. I was thinking that for the 4x4 off road guys that positraction was best while for for rear whell drive cars facing snow and wet on the raod that the open type differential was best. Possibly this explains the great differences in oppion as to which type differential is best. Can anyone educate me on this and tel lme whichdifferential teh 4thgeneration v6 Camaors have and which type is best in the snow ans wet conditions? Thanks for your help.
Positraction will basically lock up the rear wheels. This will get you going better than an open differential. However, with a posi you can wind up loosing traction on both wheels at the same time. When this happens there is nothing holding the back of the car in place andthe carget into some interesting positions. With an open rear this does not usually happen because the wheel with the most traction is not spinning and holds the rear of the car from sliding sideways. I do a lot of winter weather driving and, I prefer the positraction, but always have to keep in mind its limitations. The ideal thingis to haveposi and traction control, as the traction control will keep the wheels from slipping and the posi will provide the extra traction
Pete said it, both are good in their own ways. posi gives you two spinning tires, and open gives you one tire with taction to hold you in position and one spinning. you will just have to practice driving it with either one you have.
to see if you have posi, lift the rear of your car up, and spin a tire, if the other tire spins in the same direction, you have posi. if it spins the opposite direction you have an open dif.

Just so he knows the difference. a Limited Slip is (AKA Posi). Positraction was Chevolets trade name for a limited slip in the 60s and it hung around as a slang term.
i just went an experimented snow driving with my z28. just letting off the brakes, it will spin at 700 rpm. i was trying to turn left, but the rear was going left as well. i took it to an empty parking lot when i did some manuvers, some of which i ended up doing a complete 360, but i kept control of it the entire time (first time driving alone in the snow). the 1-2 shift sucks as well because the car will pitch left. my previous car had an open diff, but even in the wet and mud, and with as light as it was and as short (geo tracker), i prefer the open diff for snow. even though there is less traction to start with, you can just spin the one tire, which clears the tread and gets you going. do that with a posi, and you might be in a ditch
