Need help to remove the AC clutch on our 94 Camero
I can't figure out how to remove the ac clutch. The bearing is definitly going. All I see is a threaded rod in the clutch center. Also if I can get it off should I replace the whole clutch assembly or just the bearing? If just the bearing is it easy to get out?
The best way to remove the clutch is to use the specialtool made for it. Some part houses, such as Pep Boys os Auto Zone will rent you one at no charge, you just need to leave a deposit for the cost of the tool. Same deal forthe bearing, just harder to do, You may want to consider a rebuilt unit, and make life easy.
I just called Pep boys and they don't have the puller anymore.
You mean a rebuilt clutch assembly right? I'll still have to find a clutch removal tool. I could purchase a set online for about $40 but then a new clutch assembly is $95 which would be $140 total.
I could by a reconditioned compressor with clutch included for less than that but I dont think I can replace it without venting the system can I?

The system will vent when you disconnect the compressor. The good thing is that your system uses R134a instead of Freon 12. R134a, which does not harm the environment. is readly available, as are the recharge kits. Make sure you tape off the end of the hoses to avoid damp air and dirt from getting into the system. If the new compressor is dry, you will have to add compressor lube, either directly into the compressor or through the recharge fitting. The lube comes in 2 oz cans and the R134a comes in 1lb. cans. You can avoid having to pump the system out if you blow a can of refrigerant through the system to get all the air out. Connect everything up except the pressure side hose and flow the refrigerant in on the suction side. When you see refrigerant fumes, the system is purged.
Pete,
I ended up finding a puller and installer at NAPA they had the bearing as well. It took an hour to do but was much less expensive than the other options.
Thanks,
Steve
