Hood struts for a fiberglass hood
I had my steel hood replaced with a fiberglass one, and the stock hood struts are much too strong for the lighter hood. Does anyone know how they rate the struts or has a suggestion for a specific brand of struts? Thanks.
Are you tweaking the hood down while closing it?
I put a glass hood on my old 94, but it was well made with an under-hood structure that resembled the cross bracing of a steel hood. It didn't flex, and the stock struts worked fine. Possibly yours is a bit flimsy to handle the force of the struts? Have you done an online search for special struts for a glass hood? Since stock ones are made to fit a certain application, I don't know how you could cross reference one to another, if retro-fitting some was what you had in mind.
You could go to Auto Zone, look through different ones that are close to the same length and mounting ends as yours. Then give them a test to see if any are "softer" than yours.

Upon closing the hood there is some flexing which always makes me cringe. Even on opening the hood, it seems the struts are almost overextended. I guess I will take a trip down to Napa and then Autozone and see what they have there. Supposedly, my hood has the factory subskeleton or something; made by Trubifer.
Too bad you didn't have this problem a year ago when I replaced the worn out struts on my hood. They still had some life, but were too weak and couldn't quite hold the steel hood up anymore. That's another option, try to find some worn ones. Struts that are a little too weak (I don't mean dead) to hold the steel hood would still hold the glass hood up.
