Engine dies when shifting into gear
Hi all,
I have a new 3rd gen with a 350 tpi in it (actually bored out to 357) and a 700r4 auto trans. Both the engine and tranny are newly rebuilt. She runs perfectly except for one annoying problem. When I first start her up in park she runs fine (well she does idle a little rough at first) but then as soon as I shift into gear the rpm's will drop too low and often kill the engine. My only way around this is to put my foot on the brake and gas at the same time and give plenty of gas while shifting into gear, then after a few seconds let go of the gas. Which is an easy enough workaround, but I'd still like to fix the underlying problem if possible. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this and how to fix it?
Thanks in advance

does it only do it when cold, or all the time? what is your idle speed in park, and idle speed once in gear? could be a bad iac motor, iac could also be dirty or out of adjustment. tps could also be out of adjustment

More often when cold, idle speed goes back and forth between 1000 and 1500 in park... I think it is because I don't have a temp sensor so the engine doesn't think it's cold and that's causing the iac to not function properly...
