Dead Piston?

Dead Piston?
Ok.. Not for a Camaro, but close enough... My friend's 89 Z24 is having some troubles... It lacks power completely right now. He had an exhaust leak and that caused bigtime loss of power.. After repairing that, the power increased a little bit, but we are still having major issues. It idles sort of weird... There's no power there when he floors it... His 0-35 time is probably around 8 seconds... His car sucks down a ton of gas now... It shakes really bad when accelerating in first...
Could it possibly be a dead piston? that's what I suggested, but he doesn't believe me. He thinks head gasket, but there is no white smoke pouring out his exhaust like you would think.

RE: Dead Piston?
You can have a hrad gasket blown between cylinders that wouldnot leak water but push compression back and forth between the affected cylinders. Do a compression test for cylinder sameness to eliminate this. A bent valve would lose compression in the affected cylinder only as would dead rings or a hole in the piston.
