Default carb horsepower

I think i have a stock a977 chevy 350 in my car. When i got it there was a holly 650 in it. It started fludding so i tried to rebuild it and found it was missing parts. Had an edelbrock performer rmp intake so i put it on with a new edelbrock 1405 6oocfm carb and electronic ignition. I now have less horsepower and overheating problems. It seems the car is lean. Does not sputter during ecceleration so i think the carb is getting fuel. Dont want to start buying rods and jets to try unless this is the problem. Any ideas?

When you're driving the car at a constant speed does it "surge" foreward? If so you need to put in bigger jets, probably go up 1 to 2 sizes if it's surging.

Yeah, just re-jet it. I'd pull a plug of two and check, clean them if need be (doubt they need it), then after re-installing, rejet two or even three sizes up and try it again. After a few hundredc miles check a plug again: if you see signs of running a bit rich, downsize the jets a notch -- worked for me in '77.

doesnt sound as though you have a huge lean problem but a good tuning and possibly jet changin may be in order. even a rather lean condition (and i doubt yours is ) shouldnt be enough to cause overheating. i think you need to look at the cooling system for this portion of your problems

the 600 cfm is a near perfect match for the engine and should have come real close in its stock jetting. id look at timing and wheather or not your mixing and matching port versus manifold vacuum distributors and timing specs need help or clarification let us know kurt
