do some research on a cam and lifter kit, intake manifold, headers, and mabe a carb. a camshaft is where a lot of your power comes from. i might get a cam for my car that adds 50+ hp. but if thats too much for you, allow your engine to breathe better. put headers on it and theres a big difference in exhaust flow. put on a big carb and get better response and snap to it, but dont go too big or you'll drown the poor thing. a tunnel ram intake might be too much for your intrest but it attomizes your air fuel mixture more. so an intake manifold thats a high rise or air gap would do nice. nos is something you wanna put on when your sure your motor can handle it. i thought about putting on a 50 shot but changed my mind because my engine wont be able to take it. (after a few uses anyways.) but deffinitly headers and a carb and intake.

Your lucky you have a chevy sbc...cheapest engine to build ever

Headers (guessing $200), Exhaust ($200 used maybe) and spend the rest on a nice carb and aluminum edelbrock intake

get some good headers, exhausts and intakes.

Want to get the car quicker? Get a short shifter

these are all from jeg's and the following is the part numbers, all of the parts that are matched with those number are pretty well in cost range, they add a little bit of hp but also save you a little money, all of this plus a lot more is what i put into my motor and that thing rips.

350-2102-camshaft and lifter kit
350-1403-carburator
350-7800-timing chain

that brings the total up to $460.98, you kinda think that you would get a little more for that much money but the parts are very reliable and work very well, i deffinetly recommend getting these if you are just looking to add some mild horsepower to get started. good luck, keep up updated on the progress.
