i need help with my car. 86 z28, tpi engine, 700r4 tranny. i noticed the last week that it had some problems going into park. now, it doesnt at all. the shifter is going into parking and staying in place, but the actual tranny does not. it will roll forward, or stay in reverse. wheres the linkage and how do i adjust it? there is one reason why i think its doing it. a few months ago, it stalled about 5 mph and i had no brakes and i put it into park to try to stop it, and all it did was make a loud clicking noise, but not a grinding noise.

 

Sticking the transmission in Park while the car is in motion is bad thing, the shock of the parking pawl suddenly engaging can break things. Being that all other gear positions work, the linkage appears to be properly set. I suspect a damaged parking pawl or detent lever. Have someone move the stick around while you take a look underneath, all that stuff is on the left side of the tranni.

 

mine does something similar ill stop and throw it into park but it will roll, learned this the hard way last yr...rolled right into a big cement thing at the gas station...but now i just use the e break too

 

well, now its progressed more. upshifting is hard, downshifting is easy, and its loose when i keep it in gear.

 

i am having the same park problem , my car will not go in to park , once you start the car its in reverse but the shift indicate says park but i also don't have 1st like the shifter does not go back that far so something is wrong my dad was helping me with thisand he said that the adjustment was bottomed out (dont know which way?) this would not bother me but i dont have a parking brake to hold me still . can some one help?

I suggest you take a ride to a reputable transmission shop and have them diagnose the problem, and at least avoid having to be towed. You want to prevent further damage and avoid having to go for a complete rebuild.
