1998 3.8 a/c clicking noise
I am borrowing a 1998 3.8 manual Camaro to test drive and decide whether or not I want to buy it. It has 127k miles...but the engine sounds great. However, when I turn on the a/c, I hear a loud clicking noise which gets faster and louder when I rev or accelerate...then I turn off the a/c and it goes away. I was told its not uncommon for a Camaro (or any car) to make a clicking noise when the a/c is on. Although I get cold and hot air, this car makes a very loud noise. I have driven and ridden in a lot of cars with a/c and never noticed clicking quite so loud. Since I know almost nothing about cars, Im hoping this is normal...but if if its something to worry about, I want to find out before I put money into the car. Any suggestions?
The clicking is usually from the AC compressor clutch cycling in and out. If it does that at a rapid rate, it is a good chance that the refigerant is low. Try adding a can & see if makes less noise.
