It needs to be on the dash to work. There are some that look just like garage door openers though so that may be a way to go.

 

It wouldn't loose functionality unless it's line of site was obstructed, i.e. windshield wiper and you wouldn't be able to pick up alerts that were comming from the back/sides, so it'd pretty much be useless. Just stick it in your windshield and take it down when you aren't using it, that's what I do with mine. I have the Escort 8500 X50...it's a nice piece, and I work at Best Buy so I get a discount(yea!!). It's saved my *** a few times, I really don't speed(5 over), but it's nice to know when cops are there so I can slow down to the limit so they don't pull me over just for being a kid in a fast car with loud exhaust...

 

Are Radar decetors illegal now? why would you have to hide it? or do you just want it not to clutter up your car? jus wondering

 

They are not illegal here but I was told buy a cop that if they pull you over and see you have a radar detector, your gettinga ticket, there will be no warning or talking your way out of it.

 

They are only illegal in Vergina & washington DC, and you cant have anything hanging on your windshield in California & minasota. At least thats the way it was last time I check'd. But I have also heard that there is no warnings for people with radar/lidar detectors. There purpose is to try to evade police radar & police dont like it So they will get you when they can, no matter how much you cry or how low your top is.
