Default Spun rod bearing in 2010 camaro. Can the engine be saved?

I have a 2010 lt model. I was driving down the road and it died out on me. I got it to start up again and it starts every time but there's a ticking/knocking sound. The car doesn't die so I know it's a spun rod bearing. It's a 2010 camaro so would it be possible to rebuild the engine I have instead of getting a new engine?

The answer is, yes and no. Yes the crank journal can get ground and polished down and you use undersized bearings, as long as it didn't get badly gouged beyond repair. I've rebuilt an engine that locked up from no oil (no doing of mine). The bearings were literally welded to the crank, but it was salvageable and came out like new.
Gotta ask though, are you certain it's a spun bearing? A spun bearing would sound like a knocking thud noise from the oil pan area, not a "ticking" sound.

I'm pretty sure that it's a spun rod bearing. I had a mechanic look at it and heard other camaro's with them. Are their aftermarket parts out there to fix my engine? The reason I ask is because I spoke with a place that rebuilds engines but he wasn't sure if he could do mine since it's so new.

You would want to dismantle the engine and do an exploratory first. Your crank may be perfectly fine once a machine shop reconditions it.

If a rod bearing has actually spun, there is a very good possibility that the big end of the connecting rod got distorted and has to be resized or better yet the rod should be replaced, otherwise the bearing will fail again in short order, If a main bearing is spun, then the bearing cap may have been damaged which may require replacement and line boring. As 69 said spun bearings sound more like hammer blows than ticking, but it is hard to prove without dismantling the engine.

I was quoted 4700 dollars to put a used engine. It's 4700 after labor and all of that. Would it be cheaper to have my current engine rebuilt? The engine is no where near 100,00 miles or 75,000 miles, or would it still be cheaper to just get a whole different engine and have it installed?

i would rebuild or replace, rebuild yourself is usually about the same cost as crate motor so having someone else do it is considerably more. good low mile used engine would be my course/

With nowhere near 75k miles, I'm curious why a bearing spun. Have you tried talking to GM (not the dealer)? I know you're beyond warranty, unless you had an extended, but it wouldn't hurt to run it past GM and see what they say.

I was deployed for the past 9 months and the wife was driving the camaro. She never got the oil changed and of course once I get back it spun. I still have the gm warranty and I have a extended warranty but they won't cover it because I do not have service records for it while I was away.

This is not my camaro in the video but this is exactly how it sounds when I start it up.
