Default RING GAP

I am working on the 350 setting ring gaps the ring didnt come with instructions on gap and the sealed power site is down they are moly rings. The top ring gap we have is .015 to .017 the second ring gap is tighter I have been reading some stuff which is telling me that the second ring gap should be greater than the first to reduce flutter and increase sealing they give a spec of 0.020 does anyone have experiance with this method?

First off, what type of pistons are you using? That makes a big difference. At times, unless I need a top gap that is very wide, we run the second rings with more gap to allow that built up pressure between the top and second ring to bleed off. We have been running our second rings in the low 20's and the top rings anywhere from .018" up to almost .040".

Could it be Zollner? If so, they are primarly a heavy duty piston company that I think got out of the passanger car piston business. Either way, I think they are cast. That being the case, run .018" on the top and .020" on the second.

Interesting trivia about the Zollner piston, while doing an unsuccessful web site search I found that the owner of the company started the Pistons basketball team, I think the piston manufacture must have gone overseas though.....

Same guy and the team used to be in Indiana before moving to Detroit. A man that used to be a sports announcer here in Baltimore when I was growing up, Charley Eckman, was the head coach of the Ft. Wayne Pistons in the mid-late 50's. He died about 10 years ago but he was a local sports icon that I remember waking up to in my school years and catching the baseball scores.

Ah....the good old days.
