Post Putting distributor back in, now it's off alignment. How?

Well, here's the story. Bought a new Edelbrock intake so we had to take out the distributor. Before we did that, we made sure to mark where the rotor pointed on the firewall. Took off the old intake, put in the new one and WHAM, the distributor does not line up properly! It'll go in, but not where we line up the marks....it's about 40 degrees off. The car was never turned over and we didn't mess with the distributor. Any ideas on how/why this happened? And how to fix it? Thanks!

When you took it out the gear turned. Pull it back up and turn the gear, and try again. Or, turn the oil pump shaft with a screwdriver when the distributor is pulled. It takes some patience.

Just one more thing, you are planning on re-timing the engine right? If so then the position of the distributor at this time is not very important, unless turning it will cause problems with your vacuum advance physically getting in the way.

If your not planning on it...I would suggest it. Its pretty easy.

The gears down the hole are kind of like a screw, as you pulled out the dizzy it was turning, but you didnt notice. Off-set the dizzy a bit while installing and watch it turn till you get it right.

i kno whats wrong... when he pulled the dist the oil pump shaft turned some.. when u put it back in it dont sit all way down unless one tooth off.. take screw driver... or old dizzy n remove the gear then turn the oil pump till groove is just a tad counter clockwise from where your rotor should point. oil pump shaft groove runs paralell with direction rotor points
