Default De-Stroked 400?

All you Expert Motorheads! What do you think of this potential set up?

Late 70's 400 block bored .60 over

327 crank - 6" rods (I figure the displacement will be around 380-385?)

13:1 dome top pistons.. teflon skirt

A Comp Thumpr Cam 287 Hydraulic (Intake lift- 489 Intake duration - 287)

Heads (pretty much stock except for heavier springs) 76cc chambers.

Edelbrock performer manifold and 650 carb.

2400 stall with TH350 tranny...

Would go in a nice 74 Camaro that will only see the STREET... No STRIP.

The car has some high gearing now (2.73), but will take it to some mid 3's.. NO LOWER...

I could have some fun with that set up huh?

Your math is a tad off. A 4.185" bore x 3.25" (327) stroke, gives you 357.65 cubic inches, not 380-385. It's a destroked 400, an over-bored 327, or a higher winding 350 with an .040 overbore.....call it what you will. And you don't want the gut wrenching torque of a 400, why?

My bad on the math.. was thinking about about a 350 crank, not 327... that would have made about 370+ and then the overbore... Heck, I could even be off with THAT MATH.

Thanks for the math lesson...

I wouldn't say I "don't want" the torque of the 400... was just asking for thoughts about the combo...

After much looking/reading/researching I do think I will stay away from the over-square engine...

thanks, FC

The 350 crank is not going to fit properly in a 400 block being that the 400 block main bearings measure 2.65" and the ones on the 350 measure 2.45". There are, or were, bearings available with a thicker shell to make up the difference, but they weren't very reliable.

Not sure why you would want to go .060 on a 400 block if you didn't have to. Cooling issues would be your first problem. If you were going with a 350 crank and a .030 bore you would have a 377 motor. High winding and a fun motor in light car. You choice of heads would be you biggest down fall of all thing mentioned. A set of Vortec cut for bigger springs and drilled for the steam holes would be a BIG advantage over the stocker 76cc chambers. From there a set of after market heads would be your biggest advantage.

I'd make a 377 or 383 both bad *** motors, if your not looking to take it to the track a vortec 350 would be nice also
