Default Budget engine build

Well I think I might have my budget 350 build figured out but would like some opinions. The block is a two bolt main 350, crank is polished stock cast, The heads are 993s that I am going to mildly port and rebuild 75 cc chambers 1.94--1.5 valves, the cam choice is comp cam http://www.compcams.com/Technical/Se...umber=12-246-3 The pistons are Keith Black hypo dome pistons .100" that displace .5cc of cylinder volume they are a flat top dome. The pistons with a .017 thick head gasket and a stock deck height of .025" gives me a quench height of .042" with the piston compression height of 1.561. The rods are 5.7" (scat or eagle I beam)because that is what the pistons are set for, using that rod length my dynamic compression is 7.92 and my static is 9.77, cylinder pressure max is 185.5 @4000 rpm and the ve is 92.5% at 4500rpm with a 750 cfm carb and a high flow dual plane manifold.

Hopefully I crunched the numbers right... What do you guys think? DD dyno spit out 413hp @5500 rpm and carried it to 6000, The torque was 440 max at 4000 rpm.... Estimated costs: cam $110, block $40, bore hone clean $300, crank polish $30, rods $210, pistons $230, oil pump $50, manifold $120, gears timing chain $80, head cost $450, damper $60, bearings and misc $100, balance assembly $150.00. Will probably have around $2000 in it.

sounds like a good setup i don't know if you will hit the 400hp mark, but it will be a stout engine i would say mid 300s i have close to the same setup but i have aluminum heads wiht 10.5-1cp and i barley brock 415hp but i would go with a 650-670carb you won't notice any thing lost at the top but it will give you a killer take off

Ya I think the dyno program is a little happy lol, what kind of strikes me as odd though is the price of some of these crate engines, some of the stuff I have and didnt list which would cost more..... and the crate engines being 350 360 hp for $2500 dont really see how they do it.

I've had real good luck with the extreme cam grinds for Comp cams..

your lift is over .460 so you may run into rocker arm to rocker stud problems unless you run long slot rocker arms or aftermarket rockers...be sure to double check with who ever is doing your heads and make sure they have at least .50 clearance from the valve guide top (or the top of the PC seal) to the bottom of the valve spring retainer.. I had several sets come back to the shop because the customer decided to throw in a higher lift cam and not check the clearances. the cam lift crushed the PC seals and cracked severalguides....He was pissed but I wouldn't do a warrenty on it...
Also spend a few extra $$$ and get the valve springs set up correctly. I'm a firm beliver in setting the load to the correct amount at rated valve lift.

Are you using new head bolts? be sure to chase the holes with a good tap to clean the crap out of the holes..I always did this for my customers but few machine shops will take the time...

What are you running for ignition and exhaust?

Do you plan to gasket match the heads to the intake?

What oil pump did you settle on?

I prefer the old standard flang 750 3310 vacum secondary carb.. with the standard steel spring in the secondaries..I also use a 1 inch open spacer between the carb and the manifold..Just my preference...

What do you think about the press in studs I could pin them if i have to convert to screw in it isnt worth it I could get the summit heads. Are the 993s potentially a decent flowing head? Ive never run a thin head gasket like the .015 is there any problems with this? New bolts all around. I was planning on the stock melling pump but I heard some people were having some issues with them so i was looking at the melling select and changing the spring to the stock pressure. I plan on headers type will depend on the car(the engine is a backup for the 406 we built for this season unless I can find a decent 2nd or 3rd gen cheap enough) if we go to a street car it will be hei if it is for the drag car it will be msd pro billit and crane high 6 and coil. I have the 3310 and rebuilt it already. What would be a good manifold? The gasket would be matched. Thanks for looking at this I certionally do appreciate it !!
