No Start on 85 z28 with a Rochester Quadrajet
I just got done rebuilding a Quadrajet (electric choke) that was on my z28. It was running ok before, but was having poor idle and gas mileage on the 305...
I bought a rebuild kit from NAPA on Saturday and spent all day cleaning the carb... spent the rest of the night putting everything back on and the new kit parts in... made sure everything was done according to the directions and set everything to factory specs (all pins/needles/etc)...
so today I cleaned off the intake manifold and got all the years of gunk and sludge off of the surface, talk about some elbow grease... well once I did that, I put the carb back on and connected all lines and plugins and attempted to start... the carb immediately flooded... I took off the top the carb only to investigate and found that the float was not seated correctly... I fixed the float and made sure.that the needle was seated correctly and reassembled the carb...
on the second attempt, I tried to start and the car turned over, no fuel spilled over, and it did not start... I figured the car was flooded so I let it sit for about 2 hours and tried again... currently the car is still not starting, but it is turning over... gas can be smelled as gas is getting to the carb and jets...
my question is what is hindering the car from starting up..? Is there any ideas that anyone has on this topic, because I am at a loss for options...
Helpful advice, please no "swap for a volley/edelbrock/etc." If I were able to do that (financially), it would have been done before...
thanks in advance...

I think I found the culprit... I left the car jumper cabled to the truck for a while... I started checking wires to make sure everything was plugged in and I came across a loose clip on the distributor... im not sure if it was plugged in (clip closest to the firewall) and pushed it up... I then got in the car and she started right up... not sure if it was a low battery charge (she wouldn't start earlier even while cabled up) or the little clip...
Now, since I got her started, any help from anyone on tuning it would be phenomenal... it smells like its running a little rich, and she idles in park (after running for about 30 minutes) at 1100 rpm and in gear at 750ish rpm...
Any ideas on how to get the idle down some while in park/neutral (or is this normal) and leaning up the mixture..? Thanks a lot..!
