As the work progresses on my 67 RS SS, 350 I examined the carburetor a little closer, it is in sad shape (barn stored 25+ years) it is a quadrajet 4 barrel and says CARTER mfg. on the side of the body, below that in small script is GMC, on another area of the carburetor body in biger script it says quadrajet? In casual examination I did not see any part or date numbers on the carburetor, where should they be located? It looks like any other "Rochester" quadrajet I've dealt with exception of the CARTER mfg on it?? hipirn

 

A lot of people don't know that in the 60's, Carter made some Quadrajets too because Rochester couldn't keep up with production. There should be a round metal disc pressed into the left side of the body with the i.d. codes stamped into it.

 

I have also heard thet there would be numbers stamped on the top lip where the air cleaner fits. I think rebuild kits are still available for it.

 

Thanks camaro 69 and cplthomas. I guess I was shocked when I discovered my CARTER quadrajet, had no idea there was such a thing! I've worked on cars to some degree or other for the past 50 years, mostly GM and I'd never seen one of these units. It's in poor condition (outside appearence) and I was just going to try and replace it, now I'm not so sure as it just may add uniqueness to a fairly unique mark! I've not approached anyone about restoration possabilities, there may be someone out their who'd take it on? Phil (hipirn)

 

Hang on to the Carter. I was crusing the web looking for information on Cater Q-jets and ran across this not too old thread. I joined just to give my 2 cents.

My 70 Chevelle, which I bought new and still have, came with a Carter Q-jet. It was the L48 350/300 engine. Many years later I replaced it with a new, from the dealer, Rochester one but was very unhappy with the results, returned the Rochester and rebuilt my Carter. My 350/300 was a stump puller with a very mild cam and lots of bottom end torque. I could idle down to 400 rpm and keep it real smooth. Since then I obtained a couple more Carters and try to re-build when needed. Unfortunately the Chevelle is in my spare garage in need of a complete restoration. I have not driven it in almost 10 years. The carb is all gunky but the engine will still fire off fine when needed. (with fresh fuel)

The Carter Carbs are rare but a much better product. Rebuild and keep yours!

 

classic2step/all I recently cleaned up the Carter quadrajet enough to see that it wasn't as bad as I first thought and appears to be rebuildable/restorable.. Found some numbers of it too! Now to get someone to do the work! I probably won't go the complete restore route at this point.. Sadly am going to have to leave this project until warmer weather as I can't take it South with me. Maybe next year!! hipirn

 

does anyone know where you can geta rebuild kit for the carter quadrajet? i have two that i would like to rebuild but i cant find a rebuild kit for it. will the rochester kits work?

 

Physically, it's still a Quadrajet carb, just by a different builder name. Have you been looking for a rebuild kit according to the numbers on the carb? Or have you been asking for a kit to fit a Carter Quadrajet? I would think if you go asking for a kit for a Carter, most parts guys are going to think you're nuts, because the existance of a Carter/Quadrajet isn't common knowledge.
