Default stereo issue

i am losing volume/noise sometimes. at this time it is all the time except when volume is down to like 8-10. it does make some noise but is extremely muffled. it seems to be doing it on all channels so im thinking either head unit or short but if its all channels where would the short be. im gona pull the head unit and look there then tear into the amps wiring to see if anything is obvious. it will work fine sometimes, had it on for 2 hours for soccer practice and it worked fine. started messing up on the way home. its done that before and then worked fine but this time its not. kenwood kdc-x994, alpine mrp f-300, profile ap700m.

If radio works fine during engine off, battery power only.
If noise is present during engine running, alt on, could be a faulty diode in the alternator or a loose connection for power.
