You shouldn't just throw a tire size on based on looks MK. A lot goes into tire size. For example, a solid rear axle is not meant for the same size tire as an independent rear suspension such as in the Corvette. If you go to too low a profile, you begin to sacrifice handling.

You're are right that you shouldn't go just by looks, but I suggested 245/50s that come stock on the Z28s so he doesn't have to worry about having issues with them, but the choice in tire size and brand are ultimately up to him and as long as he doesn't go wider than his rim supports or taller than what can fit under the wheel well, he'll be fine. He's using the car as a DD, not for autocross.
