Want to start tinkering with my 95, any suggestions?
I own a 95, and after I return from Iraq I want to make it my project car. However, I've never had as much of a chance to really work on cars, aside from the minor repairs, and I'm not quite sure where to start. It has some high miles, (almost 200,000) so should I even bother with the current engine? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks for your service!
First place to start is to spend the $25 for a haynes or chiltons repair manual. You will find that these cars will require some tools that may not be common to your tool box. Mostly metric wrenches and torx, and a good set of tools to disconnect the gas lines, etc. depending on how deep you want to get into these cars. Use a camera and take plenty of pictures of everything before you start your projects so you will have reference pics. Spend time here researching the threads and ask questions before you start.
As far as your engine, if you are wanting to mod it or hotrod it, no! Too high mileage but if you are just wanting to fix its problems learn, yes, depending on what is wrong with it. Check the oil pressure when warm, it will give you a good idea on how much wear the engine has.
Look up your motor SGT and ask him to hang out and do some wrenching on a few hummers! They always need a hand. Just don't let them talk you into changing the run flats! That sux!
If the internet over there is any faster than it was when I was there, maybe you can get a full pic downloaded in the 15 minutes you are allowed!
