Whoa, hold on speedy. Change your oil first, see if it helps.

what they said + could be exhaust leak. or lose spark plug. both can make a ticking noise. also a lose rocker arm.

I haven't had ticking issues, I've had tapping issues at idle. My dad said back on his 67 and 68, he'd have tap-it issues with the distributor or what not, but that wouldn't be the case here. I've got it where it only does it at idle, so it could simply be the tortque of the engine against the engine mounts or a dozen other things. Annoying, but tough to track too.

Piston slap was more a problem in and around 1998 when GM went from "select build" to "net build" as far as engines were concerned. Keep it simple to start with, exhaust leak ticks will get alot quicker and alot louder under load. If its plenty audible at idle get out there with an automotive stethoscope or a screw driver and see if it is more in/around the lower intake manifold or somewhere else.

Two more things it could be. A bad fuel injector can make a louder than normal clicking noise. Also, at night, stick your head under the hood while the engine is running and look for any sparks around your plug wires. You could even have a cracked/burned boot, and a spark will get thrown from a wire to the head. There are to many things it could be though, for us to be able to tell from here. Get yourself a section of heater hose and use it as a stethoscope while you prod around the engine. You just might be able to pinpoint the source.

i paid 400.00 for my car in ****y shap

i did the paint and body so now i have about 1200.00 in the car

a smashed z28 with good motor and trans=1500.00

then im leaning to rebuild the block wile its out (guestmate) about 1000.00

im at 3700.00 for a z28 but ill get money back for stuff i part off the car that i dont need seats, dash, doors, mirrors, and exc
so im guessing ill have a z28 in mint condition for 2700.00-3000.00
