anyone know what temp thermostat i should get for a 97 RS? i dont even know what is in it right now. my problem is that when i am driving and in traffic my temp gets hot like up to 230 then when i drive it goes down then when i am stopped in traffic again it goes back up. if i sit with the car in park running the temp does not go up it stays around 180 or so. service engine light is on and the code is p1651 fan 1 relay control circuit. i replaced the relay and as soon as i put the new one in the fans went on.the light went off but soon after came back on. only happening now that its getting warmer out. thanks for your replies

The temp. should go up when your not moving, because there is an air deflector under your radiator that forces cold air around the radiator and engine bay, keeping it cooler. When your stopped no air is being pushed around the radiator so it runs hotter. It may be running around 180 in park because it is only at idle and around 230 in traffic because you've been driving it. 230 may be a bit warm though. When I'm stopped for a while it only gets up to about 210, and the cooling fan turns on, so the temp. doesnt go any higher. Check and see if the cooling fan comes on around 210 or so, and if it doesnt that could be part of the problem. There are 2 fans I believe, one turns on when the AC is on, and the other turns on then it gets hot.

 

the fans were not turning on until i changed the fan relay 1 then they came on instantly. i do hear the fan sometimes. i will check to see when i turn on the air. thank you

 

you have a 195* right now, if your gonna change the thermostat, get a 180*

i dont hear them when i am driving i did hear them while i was parked. tomorrow i am going to look at it when it gets hot. if i turn on my air they should go on right,or at least 1 of them.if they are working any idea why i still get that code? thanks
