suspension question
does anybody know how to tell if the car needs new shocks or springs? im noticing a bit of a thumping sound when i got over speed bumps, and i noticed that when i make turns in a very slow speed i can hear a noise, im praying its not the ball joint or anything
Springs support the weight of the car. Shocks control the up & down motion of the car by slowing the spring action. A car with weak springs will ride lower than normal, or one corner will sit lower than another. Bad shocks show them selves by allowing the car to continue bouncing after hitting the initial bump. If you know the design ride height of the car you can use a ruler to measure it. You would need a manual to tell you exactly where to take the measurement. You can test the shocks by sitting on each corner of the car (watch out for the paint, and if you are large be careful not to bend the sheet metal), and jumping off. The car should return to the original height without bouncing up & down. For proper handling the springs & shocks must be matched to each other. If you change to stiffer springs, you should also change to stiffer shocks, or vice versa.
i have a suspension question also. Whenever i go over a bump my rear end makes a squeaking noise. Im guessing its the springs cuz i replaced the shocks and struts. do all camaros do this or is it something i should or might wanna fix? Also do all camaros ride rough cuz when i replaced my shocks and struts for about a month they where really nice but now its back to the normal rough ride.
May want to look at the rubber bushings in control arms, sway bar, panhard rod, etc.. You can find out the culprit by spraying them one at a time with penetrating lube & the noisy one will go quite for a little while. Then you know which one to replace.
